ROTTNEST ISLAND — ASBESTOS
964. Hon KATE DOUST to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Tourism:
I refer to asbestos
material found recently by visitors on Rottnest Island.
(1) What was the
source of the broken white chrysotile asbestos found at Bathurst recently?
(2) Are there concerns there could be more
loose asbestos buried that could be exposed from bad weather on the island?
(3) If yes to (2),
what is the Minister for Tourism doing to remove it?
(4) Will the minister
table the most recent Rottnest Island asbestos risk register; and, if not, why
not?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) The source is unknown; however, it is
likely to have been fragments of old asbestos cement roof sheeting.
(2)–(3) The Rottnest Island
Authority maintains a register of sites where asbestos has been identified.
This is updated annually and the sites are remediated based on professional
advice.
(4) The register is undergoing annual review
and being updated by a registered asbestos and environmental management
specialist. When this is completed, the register will be available for viewing
at the Rottnest Island Authority Fremantle office and the visitor centre on
Rottnest Island.
