MAYLANDS TRAIN STATION —
PUBLIC TOILET
411. Hon TIM CLIFFORD to the minister representing the
Minister for Transport:
I
have received feedback from Maylands constituents regarding the need for public
toilets to be built at the Maylands train station. I understand that the
Public Transport Authority has said that it would not permit a toilet to be constructed at the station and the proposed
alternative site is located in an infrequently visited part of the town centre.
(1) Will the
minister please confirm whether the public toilets will be permitted to be
built onsite at the train station; and, if not, why not?
(2) Does the
minister understand that the proposed site for the toilets is not located in
the main part of the Maylands town centre and that the community has raised
concerns relating to safety and accessibility for people with disabilities and
for parents with small children?
(3) If yes to
(2), what measures will the minister undertake to assure the people of Maylands
that their concerns will be addressed and that a viable solution that meets
their expectations will be provided?
(4) Will the
minister please detail what consultation has occurred with the Maylands
community regarding the location of the public toilet in question?

(1) The Public
Transport Authority has advised that at this stage a toilet facility at the Maylands
train station would require substantial maintenance, cleaning and a security
presence, which would divert funding and staff resources away from their core
duties of providing public transport services.
(2)–(4) Decisions
relating to the provision of toilet facilities within the Maylands town centre
other than within the Maylands station are for the local council to determine
in consultation with the local member.
