KIMBERLEY WORK CAMPS — SEX OFFENDERS
I have a supplementary question. Will residents in Warburton and Dowerin, where the government is proposing to build, and is building, work camps now have to brace themselves for sex offenders wandering around their communities? A member interjected. Mr F.M. Logan : That’s exactly what happened in Wyndham. They were there fishing at the end of the jetty. Mr D.T. REDMAN

I come back to the point I made that every effort is made to assess the risk and manage the prisoners that go through our work camps in Western Australia. It is a step towards putting in place a pre-release environment for prisoners to get them set up for release from prison. They are low risk. There is a very careful assessment for the simple reason that they are engaged with the community. They do a hell of a lot of good out there. For the most part they are strongly supported by the communities that they are in. In fact I have a couple of fights on my hands from two communities that are concerned about work camps going from their communities. One of the things we are looking at as a government—it is not something I have taken to cabinet yet—is the principle of having a mobile work camp whereby we can track and follow around Western Australia and support those levels of community work. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Minister for Health, I formally call you to order for the first time today. That concludes question time.
