YOUTH SUICIDE — UNIT 18, CASUARINA PRISON
184. Hon Dr BRAD PETTITT to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I refer to today's ABC
article titled, ''Youth custodial officer made 'ghost noises'
in Cleveland Dodd's cell, Aboriginal Legal Service alleges''.
(1) Since the
passing of Cleveland Dodd, what extra procedures, including staff training, has
the government put in place to reduce self-harming and suicide attempts in unit
18 and ensure a therapeutic model of care for young people?
(2) If none, why
not?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Minister for Corrective Services. The Department of Justice advises as
follows.
(1) The
Department of Justice continues to refine infrastructure and processes to
support the young people at unit 18. This includes the implementation of the
model of care in youth detention. The department is mindful of the current
coronial proceedings and does not wish to impose on this process.
(2) Not
applicable.
