CONSTITUTION
AMENDMENT (RECOGNITION OF ABORIGINAL PEOPLE) BILL 2014
895. Ms J. FARRER to the
Premier:
I have a supplementary question. Why would the Premier hold
off on supporting this bill—he talked about the Noongar people, but
this bill embraces all Aboriginal people in the state of Western Australia—when
every other state in this country has already included Indigenous people in
their Constitutions?

As I was about to indicate, the government will support, in a
bipartisan way, correctly drafted and correctly canvassed legislation —

The SPEAKER :
Member for Armadale, I call you to order for the second time, and member for
Victoria Park for the third time.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
We are prepared to work in a genuinely bipartisan way, giving due recognition
to the efforts of the member for Kimberley, on bipartisan legislation, properly
prepared and properly canvassed with the wider community of Western Australia,
and done in a genuinely bipartisan way. That was the offer I made to the member
for Kimberley; she knows that.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Mandurah, I call you to order for the second and third times.
Mr C.J. BARNETT :
That was the offer, and it remains. Can I say that the member for Victoria Park
sidled up to me in the corridor last night for about no more than two minutes,
and then went out and said that we opposed the legislation and opposed the
recognition of Aboriginal people. He was not telling the truth.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Further questions. Member for Perth.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Willagee! Member for Kimberley! Member for Willagee, I call you to
order for the first time.

The SPEAKER :
Members! Member for Warnbro, I call you to order for the third time. Member for
Victoria Park, you are on three calls.
