(1)–(2) I thank the member for Darling
Range for his advocacy on this project and for his work with the local
community to make sure that we could deliver an excellent project. I also thank
the members for Armadale, Cannington, Victoria Park, Southern River and Thornlie.
A whole list of people has had to tolerate, in some instances, the closure of a
rail line for up to two years, in particular the good residents throughout the
area around Armadale, Byford and Gosnells. I thank them for their patience.
On the weekend, we saw what
world-class infrastructure is all about: a brand-new train station in Byford.
The numbers are in, and we have already seen incredible patronage on the Byford
rail line. A brand-new station, centrally located, allows the Byford community
to be connected to incredible opportunities. For example, a new Armadale TAFE
is letting young people be connected to new opportunities in the training
sector. It allows everyone in the Byford community access to the services
around the area.
Thousands of people came out to
celebrate the opening of an incredible train line and the brand-new Armadale
train station. Seven level crossings were removed in Armadale and Byford, and
we delivered Long Park. I remember that there was a lot of criticism when we
announced elevated rail. The Liberal Party, the Nationals WA and many people
said that elevated rail just would not work in our community. Do members know
what happened on Sunday? We opened the seven-kilometre Long Park, and thousands
of community members were out celebrating the seven hectares of open space
created in that area.
This is all about making
commitments to the community. We made commitments to the community to remove
the level crossings, and to build the Byford extension and new Armadale
station. We made election commitments, and we have delivered them to the people
of Western Australia. Thousands of people were out, voting with their feet and
supporting our infrastructure.
The Liberal Party and National
Party opposed Metronet every step of the way, but people out there in the
community came up to us and said, "Good on you for delivering your
commitments, for sticking with the projects and for making sure that people
throughout the south-east corridor community got access to infrastructure."
This is infrastructure that the Liberal Party and National Party would never
deliver to that community.
We are very proud to have
delivered the last Metronet rail line we had committed to. We have the airport
line, the Yanchep line, the Ellenbrook line, the Thornlie–Cockburn line
and, now, the Byford line. This is an endorsement of people living in the
suburbs. This is giving people in the suburbs opportunities to connect to jobs,
training opportunities and medical facilities. This infrastructure will stand
not just for our lifetime but for generations to come. I know that people in
that corridor are very proud of what we delivered.
