WAR MEMORIALS — ANZAC DAY GRANTS
Given the decay and ongoing maintenance needs of local war memorials since the Barnett government cut Labor’s $880 000 a year Anzac Day small grants scheme program, I ask — (1) Is the Premier aware that the Returned and Services League of Australia estimates that at least $500 000 needs to be spent to upgrade WA’s memorials? (2) When will the Premier reinstate Labor’s Anzac Day grants? (3) How does the Premier justify a welcome $200 000 of support for Sculpture by the Sea in his own electorate announced before the budget when he will not show WA veterans the same respect in the lead-up to the centenary of Anzac Day? Mr C.J. BARNETT

(1)–(3) I would have thought, as shadow Minister for Culture and the Arts, that the member for Perth would support events such as Sculpture by the Sea. Indeed, I hope he will acclaim the commitment to the arts in the forthcoming state budget. Arts is important. We should have more public sculpture. I do not apologise for the state supporting Sculpture by the Sea and, indeed, acquiring a significant piece by a local sculptor. With respect to war memorials, I applaud the decision of former Premier Geoff Gallop to put money into restoring war memorials. The member for Albany will be aware that on 24 April I was in Albany to take part in the opening of Anzac Peace Park, something that this government committed to in the election campaign and delivered. Mr M. McGowan : It was the last government that started that and you know that. Mr C.J. BARNETT : No. We committed to it in the election campaign and we delivered it. Sorry; it did not happen that way. It was a Liberal Party policy and we delivered on that commitment. I think all members of the house support the RSL, building new memorials, as is the case in Albany, and ensuring that existing memorials are maintained. I am not aware of any particular issue that the RSL has but I would invite it to write to me and detail the issues that concern it. If it does, I will attend to them.
