(1) $218,836 of the allocated $795,769 has been forwarded to the Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council (KAMSC).
(2) The Kimberley Aboriginal Medical Services Council (KAMSC) is the host agency for the Suicide Prevention Strategy in the Kimberley and has been very active on the ground in engaging community members throughout the Kimberley and identifying potential Community Coordinators. Recruitment for four Community Coordinators is underway. The first Community Coordinator commenced two weeks ago.
The Assistant Community Coordinator (ACC), who commenced in May 2011, has responded to and coordinated crisis responses to completed and attempted suicides throughout the region.
This includes attending community forums, meetings and bush meetings to invite stakeholders to form the suicide prevention action plan committee. This task has developed strategically to ensure maximum uptake within the various geographical Aboriginal communities.
There is also a remote service subcommittee, made up of representatives from remote Aboriginal communities to relay the suicide prevention message, further afield, into remote communities.
A Derby committee has been formed and has been meeting monthly for the past two months to develop a Suicide Prevention Plan.
