I thank Hon Bruce Donaldson for some notice of the question. (1)-(4) The act to which the member refers is the Fishing and Related Industries Compensation (Marine Reserves) Act 1997. This act provides for the payment of compensation to holders of leases, licences and permits issued under the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 and the Pearling Act 1990, who have been affected by marine nature reserves and marine parks under the Department of Conservation and Land Management Act 1984. To date there have been no claims under this act. The Department of Fisheries has prepared draft operational policy guidelines to guide its use and to deal with claims for compensation under the act. The issues associated with the proposal are complex, and I will soon be meeting with the Treasurer to progress this matter within government. My officers and officers of the department are already meeting with Treasury to deal with this matter.
