I note that the annual report of the Insurance Commission of Western Australia for the 2000-01 financial year was tabled in the House yesterday. Will the minister inform the House how compulsory third party insurance premiums for private motor vehicles in Western Australia currently compare with those in other States and Territories of Australia? Hon N.D. GRIFFITHS

I thank the member for this question, of which I have had no notice. It is an interesting question. The House will have noted that yesterday I tabled the report of the Insurance Commission of Western Australia. I trust that interested members have had an opportunity to read the report. If they took care, they would have noted that Western Australia has very low third party insurance premiums for a family motor car. Because I was aware that members on both sides of the House are interested in this question, I took the opportunity to refresh my memory on how Western Australia compared with the rest of Australia. I am pleased to inform the House that Western Australia’s premium is the lowest in Australia at $243.20. That compares with Tasmania, $271; Queensland, $287 on an average of private insurers; South Australia, $290; Victoria, $306; New South Wales, $336 on an average of private insurers; the Australian Capital Territory, $377.65; and the Northern Territory, $382.50. Western Australia has the lowest third party premiums in Australia because the Insurance Commission of Western Australia is an extremely well run public enterprise. I trust that all members will support it in its very worthwhile work.
