Demersal fishing ban
16. Hon Rob Horstman to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the
government's demersal fishing ban and its industry assessment before announcing
the closure.
(1) How were commercial fishers, processors and
supply chain businesses consulted before making the decision?
(2) Will the minister table a schedule of
consultation sessions held with the sector before the regulations were gazetted
on 15 December 2025?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) Following the release of the
latest science in September 2025, public consultation occurred from September
to November via the "Have your say" form on the Department of Primary
Industries and Regional Development website, as well as the Fishing Futures
Forum at which the commercial sector was represented. I have also met with
individual stakeholders, including the WA Fishing Industry Council (WAFIC),
which represents the fishing industry. Meetings with WAFIC were held on 29 July,
13 August, 4 November and 9 December. WAFIC is paid approximately $1.5 million
per annum to consult with the commercial fishing industry on behalf of government.
