METRO AREA EXPRESS PROJECT — FEDERAL FUNDING
823. Ms R. SAFFIOTI to the
Treasurer:
I refer to recent comments of the Treasurer that he was
seeking federal funding for the Metro Area Express project.
(1) Can the
Treasurer explain what project he was referring to? Was it the MAX on wheels
project that the Minister for Transport has outlined or was it MAX on rail?
(2) What is
the proposed route? Where does it start and where does it finish?
Several members interjected.

(1)–(2)
Thanks for the question. As the member for West Swan should know, if she has
questions about MAX rail, she should ask the Minister for Transport.

The SPEAKER :
Members!
Dr M.D. NAHAN :
Children! I was asked a question by the ABC—actually to confirm the
Premier's statement of days before—if we would seek moneys from
the commonwealth for transport, particularly rail transport, in the state,
given the changed policy of the Turnbull government. The Premier indicated that
he was seeking moneys for the Forrestfield–Airport Link and MAX. I
responded in the positive: that when I visit and meet with the new federal
Treasurer and other state Treasurers, I will reiterate that. As we do with all
projects with the commonwealth, we will sit down and discuss its contributions
and the nature of the investment. As usual, it will follow our lead on the
nature of the investment, the type of route and other things, so we are fully
consistent with it. I note that the people from the opposite side continue to
denigrate the project, repeatedly.
Several members interjected.
Dr M.D. NAHAN :
Except that for the Forrestfield–Airport Link, members opposite have
taken it as one of theirs. In fact, they have gone out there and said, ''This
is my crowning achievement. If I ever were to get the big gong, I would do what
the Liberals are already doing.'' That is the Labor Party.
