BUNGARUN
RESERVE — CLEAN-UP
580. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the
Minister for Aboriginal Affairs:
I refer to question without notice 551 relating to the
Bungarun Reserve, which I asked the minister yesterday. The letter from the
Shire of Derby–West Kimberley was received by the minister on 12
September, and I gave notice of a question on the same date.
(1) Will the minister inform the
house whether he is concerned by the state of the old Derby leprosarium?
(2) What steps will be taken to
clean up the site?
(3) When will the full clean-up
occur?
(4) What maintenance schedule will
be put in place to maintain the grounds into the future?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the
question.
(1) As Minister
for Aboriginal Affairs, I am concerned to hear of any issues impacting the Aboriginal
Lands Trust estate, including the reserve known as Bungarun.
(2) The
Department of Aboriginal Affairs, on behalf of the Aboriginal Lands Trust, has
arranged for slashing work to commence and the firebreaks to be completed by
the end of September 2013.
(3)–(4) Future maintenance will be undertaken in
accordance with statutory requirements.
