TORO ENERGY — LAKE MACKAY EXPLORATION
I refer to answers to question on notice 1976, answered on 30 March 2010, and question without notice 169, asked on 22 April 2010, information contained in reports to the Australian Stock Exchange by Toro Energy and, on its web site, a public letter from the Minister for Mines and Petroleum to the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs and the definition of mining in the Mining Act 1978. (1) Has the minister misled Parliament, or been misled by his department or by Toro Energy when he stated that the Lake Maitland minerals being explored for were copper and gold? (2) What are the minerals being explored for at the Lake Maitland IOCG targets? (3) What assistance has been provided to the uranium industry under the co-funded royalties for regions exploration drilling program with respect to question 169? (4) Did the minister mislead the environment and public affairs committee when he stated that the Western Australian government would not be subsidising the uranium industry in WA? Hon NORMAN MOORE

I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1)–(2) I will answer these questions on the assumption that the honourable member intended to refer to Toro’s exploration at Lake Mackay rather than Lake Maitland. Hon Robin Chapple : I’m sorry. Hon NORMAN MOORE : The member gets it wrong all the time. I do not know why I answer his questions because he never reads the answers. The Department of Mines and Petroleum has informed me that, as the project titles specified in question without notice 169 are the same project titles mentioned in my answer to question on notice 1976, I provided the answer to question without notice 169 in the context of the co-funded drilling program. In providing this answer DMP quoted from the summary table of successful co-funding applicants prepared by DMP, which named copper and gold as the main target minerals being explored for by Toro Energy at Lake Mackay. DMP has now informed me that it has carefully examined all documentation contained in Toro’s co-funding application and noted that Toro has also named uranium and silver as target minerals being explored for in the company’s iron oxide copper gold model. DMP has inadvertently provided me with an incomplete answer. (3) The amount of $216 872 has been paid as co-funding for exploration drilling to the companies referred to in question 169. (4) No; the co-funding provided is only for exploration drilling. No funding will be provided to subsidise the mining of uranium in this state.
