I refer to the current system for renewal of motor vehicle registration, and ask —
(1) How long before a registration is due is a renewal notice sent to a vehicle owner?
(2) If a driver fails to pay their renewal before the due date, when is a reminder notice sent?
(3) Are there fees associated with a reminder notice, and if yes, what are the fees?
(4) If a driver fails to pay their renewal, when must they return the vehicle plates?
(5) If the driver wants to renew their vehicle registration after the due date, what is the process and associated fees?

The
Department of Transport
advises:
(1)  Six weeks.
(2) 14 days after the renewal date.
(3) No
(4) Within three months of the expiry date.
(5) The vehicle owner can pay the licence fee for the vehicle after the due date without penalty for up to three months from that date, however, the vehicle is considered to be unlicensed. The payment and process options available to the vehicle owner to renew the vehicle licence in this period remain unchanged. After three months if the vehicle owner returns the plates, and then wishes to have the vehicle relicensed, the vehicle must undergo a full vehicle examination. The vehicle owner will incur the current 2012-13 fee of $93.60.  The owner will also have to pay the normal six month or 12 month vehicle licence fees.
