I have a supplementary question. Given that teachers’ salaries make up 90 per cent of the budget for the Department of Education and Training, will the minister concede that teachers are unlikely to receive a reasonable pay rise in the coming financial year unless services to schools are cut? Mr A.J. CARPENTER

I strongly suggest that the member for Darling Range speak to the former minister and check his figures. I do not concede anything on the teachers’ EBA. I believe it unlikely - and I believe the general community and the teachers union do too - that teachers will get a 10 per cent pay rise. However, I do not concede anything. Mr J.H.D. Day: What will they get? Mr A.J. CARPENTER: The member for Darling Range should quit his job and go and do something useful. He should become a teacher, get involved with the teachers union and take part in the discussions and negotiations.
