RURAL SCHOLARSHIPS
I refer to a letter dated 7 May 2008 that was circulated to members of Parliament by the Curtin Student Guild stating that teaching, nursing and allied health worker shortages were particularly evident in rural areas and advising of the recent launch of the J.B. Fairfax Scholarship for Rural Journalism in New South Wales. (1) Is the minister aware that research has shown that graduates from rural and regional areas are four times more likely to work in those areas? (2) Will the WA government set aside funding to provide annual scholarships for students from rural and regional areas to study teaching, nursing, allied health or medicine? (3) If not, why not; and, if so, what amounts will be allocated per scholarship and when will the scholarships be implemented? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH
