I refer to the Conservation and Land Management proposal to close the boat launching facility at Chapman Pool on the Blackwood River near the Warner Glen Bridge Camping Ground from May 2006, and ask, will the Minister advise why this recreational boat launching facility is to be closed?

The Department of Conservation and Land Management is not proposing to close the boat launching facility at Chapman Pool in the Warner Glen Recreation Area. The intention is to modify the existing boat ramp to facilitate the use of non-powered watercraft and discontinue the launching of powerboats, thereby providing sustainable recreation opportunities whilst protecting the environmental and cultural sensitivities of the site. Chapman Pool is a narrow confined waterway with significant Aboriginal cultural values and is currently used by swimmers, canoeists and powerboats. The proposed modifications are intended to reduce the number of powerboats using Chapman Pool. A reduction in the number of powerboats using the pool will result in less erosion of the stream banks and sedimentation of the pool, minimise conflicts between visitors, and protect the area's cultural values.
