NURSES — ACCOMMODATION — COLLIE
800. Hon MARTIN ALDRIDGE to the Leader of the House
representing the Minister for Health:
I refer to the ABC South West report
published on 17 July 2023 titled ''Calls to reopen Collie nurses'
quarters as accommodation shortages plague country towns''.
(1) Why was the $1
million committed under the state government's priority hospital
maintenance program to refurbish the nursing quarters never delivered?
(2) Can the minister provide detail
of how this funding was reallocated?
(3) When was a determination made to
close the Collie nurses' quarters and who made the determination?
(4) What is the scope of works and
associated costs to reopen the Collie nurses' quarters?
(5) How many
health staff working at Collie Hospital are being housed in hotels, motels or
other short-stay accommodation?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) Funding
was reallocated to modernise Collie Hospital and provide vital upgrades,
including a roof replacement; bathroom refurbishments; heating, ventilation and
air conditioning upgrades; and a kitchen refurbishment. In addition, an
existing staff accommodation dwelling in Collie has been refurbished.
(3) The decision was made by the WA
Country Health Service in August 2021.
(4) As the Collie
nursing quarters is an ageing asset, it would require significant investment to
improve the facility to make it fit for
purpose. The scope of works includes a requirement for a new roof; drainage;
the upgrade of hydraulic and electrical systems; a significant upgrade
of fire and lifesaving services, detection and emergency egress; work to
address rising damp issues; the upgrade of HVAC systems; the removal of old structures; the replacement and upgrading
of decking; the rectification of structural issues with support beams; an upgrade of bathrooms; an upgrade of the
laundry; external and internal painting; the replacement of all windows;
an upgrade of security facility wide; rectification of external structural
walls; and contemporising all facility bedrooms. The detailed costs would be
considered commercial-in-confidence; however, estimates exceeded the initial
allocated budget.
(5) A total of 18.
