PRODUCTIVITY COMMISSION
REVIEW — MICHAEL BARNES
1538. Hon TJORN SIBMA to the minister representing the
Treasurer:
I refer to the minister's
earlier answer concerning cabinet's decision to appoint Mr Michael
Barnes as Western Australia's inaugural GST ''fairness fighter''
on a contract-for-service arrangement at the cessation of his present role as
Under Treasurer.
(1) What are the terms of the
contract?
(2) What tangible outcomes will Mr
Barnes be expected to deliver?
(3) Is the position a full-time or
part-time role?
(4) If it is a part-time
role, will there be restrictions placed on Mr Barnes's ability to
pursue other forms of employment and income?
(5) To whom will Mr Barnes report?
(6) Will Mr Barnes be based in
Canberra?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1)–(6) As
previously advised, cabinet endorsed Mr Barnes being engaged on a contract-for-service
basis for the period May 2025 to December 2026 after he ceases his employment
as Under Treasurer. The terms and conditions of his engagement will be
negotiated after his term as Under Treasurer expires. Mr Barnes will report to
the Treasurer and be based in Perth.
