WESTERN POWER — APPRENTICESHIPS
729. Mr D.C. NALDER to the Treasurer:
I have a supplementary question. I take
the Treasurer's response as acknowledgement of his failure to deliver
on his election promise of 50 new apprenticeship opportunities at Western
Power. Will the Treasurer now apologise to the young people of Western Australia?

AnswerView source ↗

The member did not draft that, did
he? Someone drafted that, and the member had to stand up and read it out—I
get that; we have all been there.
I think people in this place are
very happy with what we have done in terms of the new opportunities for Western
Australians. Take, for example, Western Power being sold, which is what the
Liberal Party wants to do, what would be the chance of me saying to Western
Power that it has to provide these opportunities for people in the south west,
in particular, or for those people going through school thinking about a career
in the energy sector? Could I say to Western Power, ''I want you to
invest money in training those people''? Of course not, Mr Speaker. That
is a benefit of being the owner of these utilities; I think it is a good
outcome. I will not be apologising, but I certainly will be putting out media
statements time and again, not just to get under the member's skin, but
also to celebrate with those Western Australians who are taking and making the
most of these opportunities.
The SPEAKER : That is the end
of question time.
