FIREARMS AND AMMUNITION — COMMERCIAL
CARRIAGE
699. Hon RICK MAZZA to the Attorney
General representing the Minister for Police:
I refer to the recent development of
specific conditions for the commercial carriage of firearms and ammunition, and
the enforcement of those conditions.
(1) Is the
minister aware of the impact that these onerous conditions are having on small
family-run businesses?
(2) Is the
minister aware that farmers, rural communities and remote and isolated dwellers
who rely on firearms for vermin control and the humane destruction of stock are
among those most severely impacted by the enforcement of these requirements?
(3) Is the minister aware that these
onerous requirements are unique to the state of Western Australia?

On behalf of the Minister for
Police, I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(3) The
minister's office met with representatives of the WA Firearm Traders
Association, Hon Nigel Hallett, MLC, and the honourable member on 10 August
2016 to discuss issues relating to the commercial carriage of firearms and
ammunition. As a result of that meeting, the minister requested that WA Police
meet with the WA Firearm Traders Association. That meeting has been scheduled
for Thursday, 18 August 2016.
