QuestionView source ↗
I refer to the recent significant storm damage to the road network across the southern parts of Western Australia, and to the major repair task confronting a number of local shires. (1) Has the minister received a cost estimate for the damage, and has the minister set aside any special state funding for the repairs? (2) Will the minister give an assurance that the significant costs currently being incurred by cash-starved southern shires to repair these storm-damaged local roads will be able to be recouped from the consolidated fund? Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN

(1)-(2) I recommend that the member place on notice those types of questions for which the answers require a large amount of specific detail. Several members interjected. The SPEAKER : Order, members! Ms A.J.G. MacTIERNAN : The south west and great southern regions have been disadvantaged under the traditional policies for the allocation of funding. Indeed, I greatly endeavoured to ensure that the south west and the great southern regions got a fairer proportion of funding. I was astounded to learn that this measure was strongly opposed by the National Party. It was ironic that when I sought to allocate the funding justly to ensure that the great southern and south west got a fairer share of funds, the National Party jumped up and down and demanded that I not do that. I am more than happy to get some information about the recent flood damage and provide it to the member.
