Demersal fisheries—Poaching
1208. Hon Rod Caddies to
the Minister for Fisheries:
I refer to the demersal fish stocks in the north west
of Western Australia and claims that fish are being poached in large
numbers.
(1) Can the minister provide an estimate of how
many tonnes of demersal fish are poached by illegal international fishers in
the state's north west?
(2) If no to (1), why not?
(3) Has the minister requested decisive action
from the federal government to combat poaching of fish in Western Australian
waters?
(4) If no to (3), why not?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(4) Illegal foreign fishing does not
target demersal scalefish. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional
Development repeatedly works with the Australian government agencies on
multiagency responses to incursions of illegal foreign fishing.
