OLD
DUNSBOROUGH BEACH — SHARK-PROOF ENCLOSURE
1046. Hon LYNN MacLAREN to the
Leader of the House representing the Premier:
(1) Is the
government considering funding a shark-proof enclosure at old Dunsborough beach
this summer?
(2) Is the government considering funding a shark-proof
enclosure at Busselton this summer?
(3) If no to
(1) or (2), why not, given that the Premier has suggested that ocean users,
especially those in the south west, will be at risk of shark attack this summer
due to drum lines not being deployed?
(4) Has the
Premier considered funding a different type of shark-proof enclosure that does
not have the large holes and gaps in it that the one last year at Dunsborough
had?
(5) If the
government is undecided about whether to fund a shark-proof enclosure at
Dunsborough this summer, when is it likely to make a decision, given that
parents would like to know now whether an enclosure will be available for this
summer's children's swim classes?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of the question.
(1) The
government funded the construction and installation of the old Dunsborough
enclosure for the 2013–14 summer. It is understood that the City of
Busselton intends to deploy the enclosure for the summer of 2014–15.
(2) The
government is currently considering the evaluation report of the trial
enclosure deployed at old Dunsborough and options for deployment of enclosures
at other suitable beaches in the metropolitan and south west regions.
(3) Not
applicable.
(4) The
diameter of the mesh used in the old Dunsborough beach enclosure was designed
to prevent seaweed build-up. The enclosure was found to be structurally sound
and provided protection to beach users with no environmental impact and at
reasonable cost.
(5) As per
(1), it is understood that the City of Busselton intends to reinstall the
enclosure for the coming summer period. With the completion of the trial,
responsibility for the continued use of the enclosure now rests with the City
of Busselton.
