PORT HEDLAND FLOATING JETTY
132. Hon STEPHEN DAWSON to the
parliamentary secretary representing the Minister for Transport:
(1) Did the
original proposal for the new $6 million Port Hedland floating jetty include
provisions for public access?
(2) If yes to (1), when and why was
the decision made to exclude members of the public?
(3) If no to (1),
what was the rationale for spending $6 million on a jetty solely for private
industry use?
(4) What is the
value of funding needed to restore the Main Street jetty and what is the value
of funding allocated for restoration over the forward estimates?

I thank the honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1) No.
(2) Not applicable.
(3) The
project was constructed to separate commercial activity from recreational use
on the Main Street public jetty to enhance public safety and accessibility,
allowing the Main Street public jetty to be restored to its original intended
use—recreational public use. The member should note that although the
budget was $6 million, only $4 million was spent.
(4) Over the
last three years, $1.5 million has been spent on restoring the Main Street
public jetty to ensure it is safe for public use. An annual allocation of $100 000
has been set in the forward estimates for ongoing maintenance.
