KALUMBURU COMMUNITY —
SWIMMING POOL
691. Mr
P.J. RUNDLE to the Premier:
I refer to reports from ABC
Kimberley on 6 September 2018 on an election commitment made by the member for
Kimberley confirming she had not formally consulted with the Kalumburu
community on a $7 million pool.
(1) Can the Premier confirm that the
community wanted $2.5 million for a water park?
(2) Can the
Premier confirm that the member for Kimberley told the community it had to
accept $7 million for a new pool or it would lose all the funding?
(3) Now that the
Kalumburu Aboriginal Corporation CEO has signalled that the community is
working with the government, despite a lack of consultation, does the Premier
concur that the decision was made in haste and without due consideration of the
community's wishes?

(1)–(3) Unfortunately,
I am not briefed on the matter to which the member is referring. I am more than
happy to do my best to answer the question if he wants to give it to me on
notice. It is obviously a very localised issue that I have not heard of before.
I will say this though: there has been a program over many years to provide
opportunities for swimming pools and the like for remote Aboriginal
communities, and it is a good program. This program has assisted a lot of kids
with their issues with glue ear and breathing and other such issues.
Several members interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : Lots of people
seem to know about it, but I will not let it be answered by interjection.
Mr R.S. Love interjected.
The SPEAKER : Member for Moore!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I will get the
member advice if he wants to give me a question on notice on it. I like the
programs by which we provide swimming and other water opportunities for remote
communities. That has largely been a state government–funded program,
as I understand it.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
Mr M. McGOWAN : The Leader of
the Nationals WA is snapping at me over there, even though I am telling members
that I do not know a lot about the issue the member is referring to.
Ms M.J. Davies interjected.
The SPEAKER : Leader of the
National Party!
Mr M. McGOWAN : I know that
we, and the minister, have been in constant effort and dialogue with the
federal government about a bigger issue, which is the $100 million being cut
from remote housing. It would be nice if the National Party would assist us in
that.
