I refer the Premier to his comments on Radio 6PR yesterday morning regarding the placement of a $4 000 newspaper advertisement attacking the Western Australian Police Union’s wage claim, and I quote, “An effort was made to actually have that advertisement taken out of the paper . . . because of the industrial relations ruling . . . .” (1) Can the Premier confirm that, in fact, the Government made no effort to withdraw the advertisement, despite giving an undertaking to the Western Australian Industrial Relations Commission that it would do so? (2) How does the Premier expect negotiations to take place in good faith when his Government deliberately broke an agreement not to comment on the matter for 24 hours by using taxpayer funds to undermine our police officers? (3) When will the Premier stop misleading the public and start taking positive steps towards resolving the industrial chaos confronting this State? Dr G.I. GALLOP

(1)-(3) It is pretty clear now to the people of Western Australia that the Leader of the Opposition has decided to oppose every initiative that the Government takes and has decided to ally himself with every group in our community that is asking more of the Government. It is a style and strategy of opposition that will get him nowhere. I was informed on Monday night by the Minister for Police and early on Tuesday morning by the Minister for Consumer and Employment Protection that an effort had been made to take that advertisement out. Their understanding was that it had happened. It is the case that it did not happen. As soon as I was told that yesterday afternoon, I corrected the record.
