The minister stated on 2 March 2004 that 30 per cent of Aboriginal children in care are placed in non-Aboriginal families, which represents several hundred children. Can the minister inform the Parliament of the number of Aboriginal people who are in the care of - (1) Aboriginal families or extended families? (2) Non-Aboriginal families? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH

I thank the member for some notice of this question. The minister has informed me that 30 per cent is an inflated figure and should have read 13 per cent. Hon Barbara Scott interjected. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH: I just did, and I am informing the member. As at 30 June 2004 - (1) Some 569, or 86.2 per cent, were in the care of relatives, indigenous carers or in placement services with indigenous carers. (2) Some 91, or 13.8 per cent, were placed with carers who were non-indigenous.
