I thank the member for some notice of this question. (1) The closure of the Midland saleyards is required as the area is within the statutory boundaries of the Midland Redevelopment Authority and will be redeveloped. The MRA had planned to purchase the saleyards land in 2006-07. However, other reasons for relocating the saleyards have also been identified and they include environmental, animal welfare, bio-security, operational efficiency and safety issues. It has therefore been proposed that the time lines be brought forward to enable relocation activities to commence as soon as practicable. Nevertheless, due diligence needs to be followed with any property transfers or redevelopment and it is unlikely that replacement facilities could be established before 2005. (2) No. (3) A submission is currently being considered by subcommittees reporting to Cabinet. A decision should be made in the near future.
