INTERNET, GOVERNMENT SITE
Can the Premier advise the House what arrangements he has put in place to ensure the new Government has a presence on the Internet? Dr GALLOP

I thank the member for the question. One of first things I did after being elected was to initiate inquiries into the best way for the new Government and Cabinet to establish a presence on the Internet. That is very important, as we found during the election campaign when the Australian Labor Party web site received many hits. Many people pursue their political inquiries and gather information through the Internet, and it is most important that we are up to date. My new web site is www.premier.wa.gov.au. Through that web site, people are able access all the policies we took to the election and monitor our progress in implementing them. It is a statement about our accountability principles. The web site might also come in handy for the Leader of the Opposition, whose comments in this place have demonstrated that he is having a difficult time coming to grips with what this Government is doing. This Government not only has a new web site whose design, content and useability rival those of most other State Governments, but also in creating it has achieved a huge saving on behalf of the taxpayers of Western Australia. Those savings were achieved because public servants were used and the job was not contracted out. How much did it cost for me and other ministers to get new web sites? Nothing; they were done within existing public sector staff hours. If all public servants were able to undertake challenges such as the one we put to the enthusiastic people who designed my web site, we would not only save a lot of money on behalf of the people of Western Australia, but also make public servants’ jobs more rewarding and offer them more opportunities to develop their skills. This is the sort of thing we are doing in government. We have reduced the size of the Cabinet. We cut down on all the perks that the previous ministers made sure were in place. We are reducing the number of government departments, the size of the ministerial car fleet and the amount of expensive contracting out. All that money is going back to the people of Western Australia. That is the difference. We have an Opposition that, when it was in government, was lazy at the wheel and had its snout at the trough making sure it looked after itself and its friends. By comparison, this Government cares for and is building the talents and capacities of its public sector, and is accountable to the people for its commitments and operations.
