With reference to the April 2000 Report on Norhealth 2020, and the progress being made with renal dialysis (Page 12) -
(1) Is the specialised renal dialysis unit in Port Hedland operational, as intended to be by June 2000?
(2) If not, why not?
(3) If no to (1), when will it be?
(4) When will the unit in Broome be established and at what cost?
(5) What are the broader elements of the more comprehensive renal disease strategy which are to be developed progressively?
(6) What is the project cost and budget for this development?
(7) What is the timetable for this development?

The Minister Replied:
(1) The Renal Dialysis Unit in Port Hedland has been operational since 19 July 2000.
(2)-(3) Not applicable.
(4) It is planned to have satellite dialysis services established in Broome in the first half of 2001. The total cost of the development of the unit is not known. However, the Health Department of WA has set aside $1.068 million for capital works for the development. Additionally, the Commonwealth Government have committed $0.5 million for capital works for the development.
(5) A new physician service based in Broome to service the Kimberley region and help lead enhancements to prevention and management of diabetes and renal disease.
A resident specialist physician service is already established in the Pilbara region, working out of the Port Hedland Regional Hospital.
(6) The establishment and recurrent costs are being detailed at the present time.
(7) This new service is scheduled to be commenced in 2001/02.
