I refer to page 670 of the 2009–2010 State Budget, under
New Works
and I ask:
(1) Given $10 million will be spent over three years to upgrade the cosmetic appearance of the ageing Art Gallery of Western Australia, why is there no commitment to building a $ million roof-top display area to increase exhibition space and increase patronage?
(2) Can the Minister confirm the costing for a third-floor gallery addition?

(1) The $10 million allocated for new works in the 2009-10 State Budget is not to upgrade the cosmetic appearance of the Art Gallery. It is for necessary work to replace the deteriorating façade block work. The block work has been a longstanding problem which the Gallery has been managing for many years. If the façade work is not done the blockwork may degrade to the point where it poses a significant safety risk to the public. The façade maintenance will give the Gallery the opportunity to realise the original architectural intention for the appearance of the Main Building and incorporate contemporary technologies to give the façade a dynamic finish.
The Government is interested in the potential to build a roof-top display area to increase exhibition space and attract more visitors to the Gallery. The Government will consider this proposal when the Gallery presents a business case for it.
The façade maintenance work will be designed to accommodate any future roof-top development.
(2) No. The Gallery will provide costings for additional display areas and other roof-top facilities when it prepares the business case.
