National Principles for Child Safe Organisations
492. Hon Maryka Groenewald to the Leader of the House
representing the Premier:
I refer to the
government's announcement in October 2025 that the Ombudsman will be designated
as the independent oversight body for the National Principles for Child Safe
Organisations under a new scheme to strengthen safety for Western Australian
children.
(1) When
will this oversight scheme become fully operational?
(2) What
specific enforcement powers will the Ombudsman have to ensure organisations
comply with child safety principles?

I thank the
honourable member for some notice of the question.
(1)–(2) The Ombudsman, supported by the
Department of the Premier and Cabinet, has commenced developing an
implementation plan for the scheme, including planning stakeholder engagement
and timeframes. The timeframe for the scheme becoming operational and specific
enforcement powers are being considered as part of this process.
