QuestionView source ↗
I refer to the Premier's media release of 7 April 1999 in which he announced that businesses in Onslow, Exmouth and Moora affected by cyclones Elaine and Vance would be eligible for a business assistance grant of up to $10 000, and ask - (1) Is the Premier aware that some businesses in Carnarvon suffered huge losses and damages as a result of Cyclone Steve? (2) Does the Government intend to extend the same level of assistance to Carnarvon businesses as occurred in Exmouth, Moora and Onslow? (3) If so, when? (4) If not, why not? Mr COURT
AnswerView source ↗
I am unaware of how many businesses were specifically assisted in the areas outlined by the member, but I can easily locate that information. We have acted very quickly following a number of natural disasters. It must be appreciated that businesses are affected virtually every day of the week in this State as a result of flood, fire and drought. Different programs are in place to assist the affected towns. Carnarvon suffers from flooding in some years and drought in others. The Government has put a significant number of dollars into Carnarvon to assist growers and many other activities. If the member opposite wants to specifically know what the Government has put in place in Carnarvon - Mr Brown: No, I want to know about the levee banks that were put in the town to stop flooding, which resulted in substantial damage to properties immediately outside those banks. The water stayed for three to four days, damaged houses, destroyed the caravan park and other businesses, and nothing has been done about it. Mr COURT: Those houses to which the member is referring had fill put back into them virtually straight away. The market gardens were back in production in record time so that, in most cases, the tomato crops were sent to the market and were sold at good prices. If the member is suggesting that this Government did not move super quickly to get those businesses back into production as quickly as possible, the member is wrong. For the first time ever in this State the Government provided financial assistance to truck drivers who were stranded in the floods. The Government has received strong support from the Transport Workers Union for that action.
