HOUSING — AFFORDABILITY
322. MR N.W. MORTON to the Minister for Housing:
Can the Minister for Housing please outline what he is doing
to address issues associated with affordable housing around Western Australia?
Mr W.J. Johnston interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Cannington, are you finished? Carry on, member for Forrestfield.
Mr N.W. MORTON : I
had finished, but I can ask the question again if you like.

I thank the member for Forrestfield
for the question.
As I have mentioned in this house
before, this government has a strategy to address the affordable housing
problem that has been generated by the influx of many people into Western
Australia. We have developed a strategy called the affordable housing strategy,
which plans to deliver 20 000 new, affordable houses by 2020. We have already
delivered 7 600 of those, so we are already past the one-third mark in
delivering those houses. The member for Cockburn likes to play with the
figures. In terms of social housing, these are the figures for social houses
delivered. I will mention the figure from 2001 to 2008—the eight years
that the opposition was in government. It delivered —
Mr F.M. Logan interjected.
Mr W.R. MARMION :
In fact, this is from 2001 to 2008. The Labor government delivered 6 867
houses. In just four years, from 2008 to 2012, we have delivered 6 314—sorry,
5 314 —
Several members interjected.
Mr W.R. MARMION :
That is nearly the same number in four —

The SPEAKER :
Member for West Swan, I call you to order for the second time.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Warnbro, I call you to order for the third time.
Mr W.R. MARMION :
As I said, in four years, we have delivered nearly the same number as the
opposition delivered in eight years. The issue here is that we want houses on
the ground. We have already got 6 700 out of our 20 000 on the ground and, of
those, there are 5 314 social houses.
Mr P.C. Tinley interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Willagee, I call you to order for the first time. Minister, just
wind this up, please, as quickly as you can.
Mr W.R. MARMION :
Thank you, Mr Speaker.
Apart from actually building and delivering social houses on
the ground, we are also assisting people out of social houses into affordable
houses through our Keystart loans and shared equity loans. We are also
assisting private builders in joint ventures to deliver affordable houses on
the ground. A good example is the houses in the member for Cockburn's
electorate. We are on the front foot; we have a strategy. The Labor opposition
had no strategy at all—none at all; no strategy. Show me your —
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER :
Member for Mandurah! Minister, you are upsetting the member for Maylands. Will
you wind this up, please.
Mr W.R. MARMION : I
will conclude with a very simple statement: we have a strategy; you did not
have a strategy.
