(1) Which schools will be included in this allocation? (2) What will they receive? (3) When will the upgrade and refurbishment occur? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH
AnswerView source ↗
I thank the honourable member for this question. The asking of this question gives me a chance to highlight the centrepiece of the government’s election platform, that being the $1 billion plan for new and better schools. The question that has been asked of me sits fairly and squarely in relation to that $1 billion Labor commitment, and it relates to three promised areas. The first is to build 39 new schools at an estimated cost of $400 million. Twenty-eight will be primary schools and 11 will be high schools. It also relates to the $300 million commitment that we have made to upgrade existing schools. It also relates to the question of school maintenance, on which the government will spend $304 million. However, specifically in relation to the member’s question - Several members interjected. Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : Look at them! I am so glad to have them back. At least they are half alive this time around. I am very happy to provide the member with the specific responses. However, I wanted to put them within the context of the government’s commitments and what the government will do over the next four years. (1) Kinross College; Wanneroo Senior High School; Mullaloo Beach Primary School; Mullaloo Heights Primary School; Edgewater Primary School. (2) Kinross College - extension to the year 10 facilities to provide four teaching areas; new specialist areas to include science laboratory, information technology laboratory, textiles and food studio and music room. Wanneroo Senior High School - refurbishment of the design and technology area and the administration area; alterations to the photography and media area. It just gets better and better. Mullaloo Beach Primary School - electrical upgrade. Mullaloo Heights Primary School - electrical upgrade. Hon Simon O’Brien : Why? Is there something wrong with it? What is wrong with it now? Hon LJILJANNA RAVLICH : The opposition never did anything while it was in office. It let all the schools run down and did not put money into them. We had to come along and fix them, and that is exactly what we are doing. You pathetic creatures! The answer continues - Edgewater Primary School - electrical upgrade. I thank the member for this question. I am sorry, there is more - (3) Kinross College - building to commence during the latter half of 2005, for completion in December 2006. Wanneroo Senior High School - building scheduled to commence July 2005, for completion in January 2006. Mullaloo Beach Primary School, Mullaloo Heights Primary School and Edgewater Primary School - electrical upgrades in each of these schools are scheduled for completion by the end of October 2005.
