ANTISOCIAL BEHAVIOUR —
REGIONAL WESTERN AUSTRALIA
1300. Hon ROBIN SCOTT to the minister representing the
Minister for Police:
I refer to recent efforts to hold a
public meeting in Broome to try to address the scourge of antisocial behaviour that
is terrorising the town of Broome and the whole of the Kimberley.
(1) Can the
minister confirm that she is arranging to meet the shire and the residents of
the town to address this issue?
(2) If yes to (1), when will the
meeting be held?
(3) Does the McGowan
government have any plans to change its policy addressing antisocial behaviour
in regional towns, because the current policy clearly is not working?

I thank the honourable member for
some notice of this question. The following answer has been provided to me by
the Minister for Police.
The Western Australia Police Force
advises the following.
(1)–(3) Broome
police will continue to target all known crime hot spots and respond to any
reports of suspicious behaviour or crime as a priority. Measures are in place
to target offending, including plainclothes bike patrols and the rollout of new technology. Youth crime issues remain a priority
for Broome police. Broome youth police officers and a community liaison
officer have actively engaged with local schools, victims, offenders and
relevant families. Several mitigation strategies have been implemented,
including a police presence at school
grounds to monitor school car parks and surrounds; this has included local
sporting events . A police referral process has been formalised with
Broome Senior High School for antisocial incidents.
The WA Police Force and the
Department of Education are working together and with the community on a range of issues and additional supports,
including kids and parents helplines to provide additional support ;
additional Aboriginal elders in residence to work at the high school; and
increased police presence, with high-visibility
foot and bicycle patrols over the coming weeks, in and around locations where
young people congregate, including night markets, sporting facilities
and youth precincts.
Hon Robin Scott interjected.
The PRESIDENT : Excuse me!
