BANKSIA HILL DETENTION
CENTRE — MINISTER FOR CORRECTIVE SERVICES' COMMENTS
289. Mr R.S. LOVE to the Minister for Corrective Services:
I have a supplementary question.
Minister, we had yet another riot this week. When is the minister going to do
the decent thing and step aside to let someone else fix this mess?

AnswerView source ↗

The
one thing I know is that the Leader of the Opposition is not going to fix this
mess. The one thing I know is that he has not suggested a single new policy.
Not a single idea comes from the Nationals WA. We have had some ideas from the
Leader of the Liberal Party, who wants to build a new facility. There are three
sites in the seat of Vasse, but the member for Vasse has still not told us
which of those three sites she is choosing for the new facility. It is one
thing to make these glib statements in front of a TV camera; it is another
thing to do the policy work that is needed.
There was a riot at Banksia Hill
this week because 47 people, including six adults, made the decision to be
violent. I am not going to give in to violence. If the Leader of the Opposition
wants to give in to violence and support these violent offenders, that is his
decision.
The SPEAKER : I remind
members, particularly ministers in response, that this is a very brief question
time.
