(a) The Language Services Policy 2008 was endorsed by Cabinet in 2008 and supported by Premier's Circular Number 2008/14. This was superseded by Public Sector Commissioner's Circular 2009/01. The circular states that government agencies are required to have policies for funding and delivering translation and interpreting services that take account of relevant government policy, legal circumstances and the needs of current and potential clients. All government agencies are expected to adopt the Language Services Policy if relevant to their mandate.
(b) All government agencies are expected to adopt the Language Services Policy if relevant to their mandate.
(c) In 2008, information about the policy and a copy of the policy was sent to all Directors General. The policy was then published and distributed broadly across the public sector. The policy was also placed on the Office of Multicultural Interests' website.
· In 2009, three documents were developed and placed on the Office's website to assist public sector agencies in implementing the policy:
o
Frequently asked questions for public sector organisations
o
How to use a telephone interpreter
o
How to use an interpreter on-site.
· In 2010, a brochure entitled
A Guide for Government Agencies
was launched and widely distributed. Extensive consultation with relevant government agencies was undertaken during this project. The document is also on the Office's website.
· In 2011, the online DiverseWA cultural competency training package was launched, which has a module on
Working with Interpreters and Translators
that includes information on the Language Services Policy 2008.
· The Office also provides advice and information to government agencies on various language service issues as and when requested.
