IN CUSTODY WITH A HEARING IMPAIRMENT
1554. Hon PETER COLLIER to the minister representing the
Minister for Corrective Services:
I
refer to the response by the Department of Justice to recommendation 11 of the
Office of the Inspector of Custodial Services report into People in
custody with a hearing impairment , which states —
A review of the current Disability
Awareness Training and Effective Communication training currently provided to Prison Officers and Youth Custodial
Officers will be conducted to determine suitable additional information
relating to hearing impairment.
(1) Has this review been completed;
and, if not, why not?
(2) If yes to
(1), what additional information relating to hearing impairment is now being
delivered as a part of this training?

mandatory online training modules have been added to the Department of Justice's
online training platform and are being delivered to staff. The training covers
a range of disabilities, including hearing impairments, and assists staff in
their understanding of behaviours associated with hearing impairments whilst
enabling staff to assist in supporting better communication.
