I refer to the extreme weather conditions that the south west of the state has recently experienced. Will the minister advise the house whether he has negotiated or has attempted to negotiate an agreement with the Bureau of Meteorology to broadcast to southern districts livestock weather warnings that are graded according to impact severity, similar to the cyclone warnings that are issued for the north west of the state; if so, what are the results of such negotiations? Hon KIM CHANCE

The short answer is no, I have not negotiated with the Bureau of Meteorology, which is a federal government department. However, it is quite possible that we could enter into discussions with the bureau on the grading of weather warnings. At this stage, sheep weather alerts are issued, and indeed a sheep weather alert was issued for the south coast region just prior to the last weather event, to which the honourable member might be referring. I believe that sheep weather alerts are issued as either a standard or a severe warning. I may be wrong, but I thought there was a standard warning and a severe weather warning. I will check that because I think the idea has considerable merit. It seemed clear post facto that the nature of that last particular weather event had been predicted to be quite a severe event. Unless there were some kind of grading in the warning, farmers might have thought it was merely a standard warning and that the weather would get a bit nasty but not anywhere near as severe as it did get. Hon Bill Stretch : I think the red, blue and yellow emergency codes would be useful. Hon KIM CHANCE : I think it is a very good idea. I thank the member for raising it. I will discuss with my department whether we are able to interest the Bureau of Meteorology in issuing such a grading.
