TONKIN HIGHWAY —
PROJECTS — TRAFFIC CONGESTION
315. Dr A.D. BUTI to the Minister for Transport:
I refer to the McGowan Labor
government's job-creating transformation of Tonkin Highway, which
includes finally building the extension to Mundijong.
(1) Can the
minister outline to the house how these projects will support the economy and
reduce congestion for those in the southern and eastern suburbs?
(2) Can the
minister advise the house how this compares with the support these projects
received under the previous Liberal–National government?

I thank the
member for Armadale for that question.
(1)-(2) Of
course, the Labor government is focused on reducing congestion, improving road
safety and investing in our roads throughout WA. Importantly, in the suburbs —
Mr D.C. Nalder : You're
welcome.
The SPEAKER : Member for
Bateman, I have warned you three times.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : The ego of
the member for Bateman is limitless, is it not? He claims credit for projects
that his party ignored for eight and
a half years. How is that possible? Let us go through the projects: the Gateway
WA project , The Gap project, the Tonkin Highway extension and three new
interchanges along Tonkin Highway—projects that the state Labor
government has committed to that will reduce congestion and improve road safety
along the entire Tonkin Highway. This is a transformational package of work
that will create local jobs and reduce congestion.
I am sorry that the member for
Darling Range is not here because I know she would welcome the state Labor
government's commitment to these projects because they will support the
people in Byford and others throughout her electorate.
Mrs L.M. Harvey interjected.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : I am just
saying that I am sorry she is not here. She would support it.
Several members interjected.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : I said she
would welcome it. There is nothing wrong with saying that is there, members?
Several members interjected.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : No. I am
sorry she is not here. She will want to come back tomorrow to hear more about
the state Labor government's —
The SPEAKER : Minister,
through the Chair please. Members, let your minister speak.
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : Of course,
the previous government did not invest in the eastern suburbs for eight and a half
years. Not one cent was allocated to the Tonkin Highway extension but the state
Labor government is here. We are investing in the eastern region.
Several members interjected.
The SPEAKER : Members!
Ms R. SAFFIOTI : We are
making sure that congestion is reduced and life for families is improved
throughout WA.
