I refer to the water and wastewater services at the Shire of Denmark’s leasehold subdivision and caravan park located at reserve 24510, Peaceful Bay and to the report by Mr Roger Longhurst, the scientific officer at the Department of Health, entitled “Health Assessment: Peaceful Bay, Shire of Denmark”, dated 16 September. (1) Are the provisions of all 14 recommendations of that report being complied with in full at present? (2) What is being done to ensure that the Shire of Denmark installs reticulated sewerage and drinking water services, as was strongly supported by the Department of Health? (3) Can the Department of Health give an unqualified assurance that water supplies at this location meet and will continue to meet all current health standards? (4) If not, what health problems or risks are evident? Hon SUE ELLERY

(1) I thank the member for some notice of this question. Work by the Shire of Denmark is under way to address all 14 recommendations included in the report. (2) The Shire of Denmark has approached the Water Corporation to fund a reticulated sewerage system and to provide a potable water supply. The Shire of Denmark has met with the Water Corporation and Hon Nick Griffiths, MLC, the Minister for Housing and Works, to discuss the funding of the $600 000 that is needed for this program. (3) No. Drinking water samples taken on 15 October 2003 and on 4 and 25 November 2003 did not comply with the National Health and Medical Research Council Australian drinking water guidelines 1996. Further, the results consistently indicate the level of chlorine being below the acceptable levels in the recommended guidelines. The Shire of Denmark is sampling drinking water in the caravan park on a fortnightly basis in accordance with the guidelines. Although the bacterial results from the most recent sampling undertaken from a potable water outlet within Peaceful Bay Caravan Park on 30 March 2004 indicate compliance with guidelines, the level of disinfection from the outlet was measured at 0.04 milligrams a litre of chlorine, which is below the level of 0.2 to 0.5 grams a litre recommended in the guidelines. Letters have been forwarded to occupiers of houses in the settlement not to drink water sourced from the dam and signs are being affixed to all water outlets in the settlement. (4) No health problems are evident at this time. The potential health risk associated with inadequately disinfected water is gastrointestinal illness. The issue will be monitored under ongoing surveillance.
