1002. Hon Tom Stephens to the Leader of the House representing the Minister for Resources Development:
I refer to the world famous mud-flats in the area of Roebuck Bay adjacent to Broome on which migratory birds feed and ask -
(1) Has the State Government been involved in any negotiations or discussions relating to proposed mineral sands or other mining in this area?
(2) If yes, what have they involved?
(3) Are any proposals being considered that involves the construction of a processing plant for any such mining on the Thangoo Pastoral Lease?
(4) Will the Minister for Resources Development table full details of any proposals or reports that have been made available to Government in reference to this project?
(5) If not, why not?
The Minister Replied:
(1-2) Yes, the Department of Resources Development (DRD) has been involved in preliminary discussions on a proposed kaolin mining and processing plant project in the Thangoo area. The proponent has applied for six mining leases and two exploration licences for all minerals and these are proposed to be heard in the Warden's Court in late November 2000.
(3) No proposals have come forward to Government.
(4-5) No proposals or reports are held by DRD.
