The projects that the Metropolitan Redevelopment Authority is
undertaking on behalf of the government in the Perth CBD are very important in
transforming the city. They are also very important in economic development
terms and in employment generation—creating jobs. The Riverside project
is one of the three main projects underway in the CBD. It is near the Causeway
and it will, when completed, provide about 80 000 square metres of new
commercial space, 10 000 square metres of retail space, and about 4 000 new
residences. It will attract $2 billion in private sector investment and bring
about 7 000 new residents and 6 000 new workers into the area, and,
importantly, it will create about 2 000 jobs during the construction of the
project over the period of time it is underway. There are a number of precincts
there, and the main next step is the development of the former Chemlab site on
the corner of Hay and Plain Streets. Part of that building has a heritage
value, and that will be incorporated in the project. The MRA has awarded the
contract and the sale, following an expressions of interest process, to Diploma
Properties. It has been selected as the preferred proponent and it will be
providing a 16-storey development with slightly over 200 apartments and a
rooftop sky garden. The development, importantly for that area, will
incorporate a mixed-use development, including a supermarket and an activated
laneway between Hay Street and De Vlamigh Avenue. I will not take up much more
time, but this is another example of the projects that the government is keen
to ensure are undertaken, partly for the transformation of Perth and making it
a more liveable and attractive city but also for economic development and job
creation.
