Thank you very much indeed, member
for Girrawheen. I also acknowledge the member's commitment over many,
many years to the health and safety and lives of our emergency services workers
and firefighters.
(1)–(2) The
McGowan government is continuing its historic reform program for emergency
services because it is committed to
improving community safety and the safety of those who put their lives on the
line to protect our communities. Crew-cab measures are all part of that
program. Crew-cab measures protect firefighters and emergency services workers while they are in their vehicles on the
fireground. The protective measures that have been put in place include
the installation of external water deluge systems, in-cab air-breathing
systems, fire blankets, and safeguards for vital equipment such as vehicle
wiring, tyres, water and fuel lines. It has now got to the point that the
safest place in a burnover on a fireground is in the vehicle.
What has
occurred as part of crew-cab measures is absolutely sensational. Over the last
five years, $31 million has been spent on crew-cab protection. I acknowledge
that crew-cab protection was started by the previous government and I have
continued to roll that out. In 2018–19, the McGowan government
committed an additional $8.72 million to continue that rollout for other
vehicles, and by June this year another 261 fire appliances throughout the
state have been included in the installation of crew-cab measures. Most of
those vehicles are in areas that were not identified in the first rollout,
particularly those in the northern part of the state, and also the high fire
season fleet that goes to the north during the northern fire season and is
rotated and comes back to the south west during the southern fire season. That
is so far. The Labor government has installed those fire crew-cab protection
measures on 261 vehicles. That is on top of the 660 vehicles that had these
measures installed during the period of the Liberal and Labor governments.
These are fantastic measures that have been put in place. They ensure that our
firefighters on the ground remain safe and that we do everything we possibly
can to save lives.
