❓ Mr. Stephens questions the Minister for Regional Development about the degraded Marble Bar to Newman Road and seeks funding for its upgrade, potentially from Royalties for Regions. The Minister acknowledges the issue but defers funding decisions to the Transport Minister and emphasizes Royalties for Regions supplements, not replaces, core funding.

QuestionView source ↗
(1) Is the Minister aware of the seriously degraded condition of the Marble Bar to Newman Road?
(2) What steps is the Minister taking to make sure that core funding from the Western Australian Main Roads budget are allocated to an urgent upgrade to this road through a major hot spot of resource and mining company activity?
(3) If the Main Roads budget does not include funds to urgently upgrade this road, will the Minister advise whether Royalties for Regions funds, which come predominantly from mining royalties, will be made available to assist in maintaining dangerously degraded roads in close vicinity to large mining facilities in the Pilbara; and
(a) if not, why not?

(1) Yes, I am aware of the condition of this road.
(2) The allocation of funding within Main Roads' Budget is a matter for the Minister for Transport's consideration as part of the annual Budget development process.
(3) Funding for this and other roads will be considered as part of the above mentioned Budget development process. The upgrading of roads within regional Western Australia should be funded under the normal operations of government. An important feature of Royalties for Regions is that it has been established to supplement, not supplant, the existing provision of basic, essential infrastructure and services provided by Government throughout regional Western Australia.
(a) Refer above.
