ASSET SALES — WESTERN POWER
710. Mr M. McGOWAN to the Premier:
I refer to the Premier's
comments yesterday about Western Power, and I quote —
I think the public is looking for
us to come clean on that and come clear as to what our policy will be.
I refer also to comments by the
Minister for Energy today that the government will sell Western Power. What is
the policy on the sale of Western Power?

I have made it very clear indeed,
including to Liberal members of Parliament. We have talked about the sale of
Western Power. It was discussed and included in the budget. We need to, and we
will, determine over the next few weeks exactly what that will mean. We have
yet to make that decision; that is something we will make as a party.
Mr
P.C. Tinley interjected.
The
SPEAKER : Thank you, member for Willagee!
Mr
C.J. BARNETT : Having conducted two major privatisations—the Dampier
to Bunbury gas pipeline and AlintaGas—and having written the policies
in the 1990s for the privatisation of Bankwest and the State Government
Insurance Office, I can assure members opposite, if they have not realised,
that privatisations themselves are incredibly complex and there is also a range
of different options in a privatisation, and that is what we are determining at
present.
