DOUGLAS
CRABBE — RELEASE
521. Hon NICK GOIRAN to the parliamentary secretary
representing the Attorney General:
I refer to the Attorney General's initial response on
21 February 2023 to my question without notice 102 and his further response
provided on 14 March 2023 in which he cited confidentiality as the reason why a
briefing note would not be provided to Parliament regarding the release of one
of Australia's most notorious mass murderers, Douglas Crabbe, into a resocialisation
program.
(1) What is the date of the briefing note received by the
Attorney General regarding this matter?
(2) Will the Attorney General provide a redacted version of
the briefing note?
(3) If no to
(2), given the lapse of time since 21 February 2023, will the Attorney General
undertake to comply with section 82 of the Financial Management Act 2006
forthwith?

AnswerView source ↗

I thank the member for some
notice of the question. The following answer has been provided to me by the
Attorney General.
(1) The briefing note is dated 2 December 2022.
(2) No,
because the briefing note relates to confidential matters pertaining to a specific
prisoner and it is not possible to protect
that confidentiality and provide a version of the briefing note with any
meaningful content.
(3) The Attorney General will comply with any obligation to
give notice that arises under section 82.
